Synopsis

The monk Xuanzang travels to India, home of the Buddha, to deepen his study of Buddhist law. His journey westward takes him through deserts and across dangerous borders, but he finally arrives at the sacred Nalanda temple, where he studies dharma with the abbot, Shilabhadra. In 645 AD Xuanzang returns to the Tang capital of Chang’an with many Buddhist scriptures and sacred objects, and Buddhism flourishes in China.
